Stop and Replay

1 Aug

Love vintage but don’t want it used? Well I have a solution for that. Original limited 1970s-90s dead stock sunglasses. These are old items in brand new condition because they were boxed up and forgotten about from the time they were born, waiting to be rediscovered and brought back to market. These great discoveries are from Replay Vintage Sunglasses a spin off brand of La Bomba Vintage in Los Angeles.

Currently we carry three styles that are original dead stock from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Oh ya, these fun character glasses are for sure from the 1980s. I actually owned a red pair when I was a kid. Just pull the ears and they transform into sunglasses, or fold them up and wear in your shirt as a sort of brooch. These will definitely be a head turner and conversation starter. We still haven’t figured out what they are supposed to be. My vote is for squirrels but so far we’ve heard anything from piggies to kitties!

On the left we have the original folding glasses from the 90s, and they come with the foamy pouch pictured in the back. On the right is snazzy aviators from the days of CHiPs. Both have reflective lenses and are 100% UV protective.

And yes there will be more coming soon!

Posh Lady

26 May

I decided to dedicate today’s post to the style icon and fashion designer Victoria Beckham. Why? Because she rocks fashion like no other. Looking at what she’s worn over the many fashion seasons I find it hard to put into words the inspiration she presents. There’s always this balance between edgey new and vintage glamor which you know we LOVE at Fan Clothing. So here’s a compilation of my favorite Posh Beckham moments.

Find out more about her well acclaimed and already celeb studded designer collection at:  http://www.victoriabeckham.com

Pain in My Sole

20 May

Looking at the season’s glamorous shoe line up from Jason Wu it appears that sexy curvaceous heels are getting skinnier and higher! I watched women in San Franciscio treck up and down the endless hills in these stilletto babies. We are quite the resillient sex. Bravo!

Browsing around the net for pretty shoes I was drawn to a photo of these Lanvin stilettos worn by Gwyneth Paltrow at her Country Strong premier. When I clicked through to the image I found it was part of an article about how unwearable they are! The article by Glamour says:

“Last week, Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz confessed to WWD that the flat shoes on his spring 2011 runway weren’t actually meant to be a fashion statement, but a last-minute effort to save the poor models who were stumbling around “like alcoholic girls” in the titanium heels he originally intended everyone to wear. But a few pairs still made it into the show, and it turns out, they’re as torturous as he feared.”

Gwyneth Paltrow told People Magazine “I’m in pain. I feel like I’m in a torture vice.” But it’s okay because you looked pretty Gwyneth~!

For women with nerve endings and a long commute on foot (like myself) we need good SOLES.

Unless you have knee or back complaints, it’s not really the height of the heel that hurts but the fit. Here are a few tips on how to choose your 4″ killers wisely.

  • It has to fit your feet right. Everyone’s shape is different so when you try them on, make sure the shoe cradles your foot properly at all these pressure points: last joint of your little toe, first joint of your big toe and your Achilles. If it fits right and it’s just the leather that is a bit stiff you can always oil and stretch, with time it’ll be broken into. But if the shape is off  it’s going to hurt and you’ll break your feet before you break in your shoes.
  • Be sure there is room for your toes so they aren’t smooshed but not too much so they blister from rubbing against the material. Soft leather also helps.
  • Pick shoes with ample padding on the soles and the ball of your foot. If the shoes are hard on the bottom buy half a size bigger and insert padding yourself. The foamy drug store padding for $3 works just fine. If unsure bring a set of padding to the shoe store and try it on together. I’m sure the clerk won’t mind.

Beauty doesn’t have to painful. Brands like Seychelles, BC Footwear and Jefferey Campbell consistently make sexy stylish shoes with soft leather uppers and walkable soles; which is why we love them!

What You Need is Wood

1 May

This past Sunday we exhibited at Capsule in Hayes Valley, an indie designer extravaganza. Our favorite thing about doing these events is meeting new designers and finding great talent and creativity.

This Sunday I didn’t even have to wander far from my booth to find the best in show. My neighbor to the right set up a stand selling hand made wood ties. I know they are really hand made because he was making them as he stood there; replenishing his stock throughout the day as it sold. AMAZING! Not only that, all his wood ties are made from recycled wood gathered from all kinds of sources, old wood beams, floor boards, furniture you name it.  This means each tie is not only eco-friendly but has it’s own unique look, age and story.

These ties are not just for trend setting men, but are great for adventurous statement making women too. Wood Thumb is based in San Francisco but you can buy their unique wares online at www.WoodThumb.com

Color Me Wacky

8 Oct

Tights have been a staple for a few chilly seasons now.  However unlike previous ventures, this season’s choices have gone beyond just wacky colors.  Its a free-for-all of creativity.  One of my favorite makers of these works of leg art is Look from London – a Brooklyn based maker of all things tights!  If you think his online choices are incredible you need to see his collection in person.  Every pattern imaginable in at least 20 color options and can be printed on any patterned fishnet or solid tights.  I was stunned by choices.  Remember being in Sweet Factory as a kid and mommy says “okay now what do you want?”  Ya, it’s like tat.  The choice is yours – now make some loud leggy statements!

Bows in your Head

8 Sep

I must say I am terrible at doing hair and often use the many great tutorials I find on YouTube to gain wisdom. While looking for ways to do a quick bun I came across the answer to the age old question “how does Lady Gaga’s hair bow work?” I’ve always assumed Lady Gaga had a wig made out of her own hair for the effect. According to this amazing Japanese tutorial it is apparently fully feasible to do this yourself, and within 5 minutes.  Don’t worry the video has English annotations so we can follow along.  I am again in awe and amazement at the skills of other women.

The Cut Changes the Game

16 Jul

I have been increasingly frustrated with my closet the past few years and it finally dawned on me why nothing is fitting like it used to. I’m closer to 30 now than 20 and that is actually a big difference. Not a difference many people in Los Angeles would admit to but it’s true.

At this age my butt is just bigger thanks to days of sitting in an office rather than running around campus. My tummy sticks out more – probably due to all those drinks and late night food binges catching up to a slowing metabolism… oh yes and totally skipping my pilates classes because I’m getting busier and lazier in equal parts as time passes does not help.

Bottom line is I don’t have the time or energy for clothes that make me feel sad or self conscious.

Luckily I’m not the only one that feels this way. I met a great designer who told me her entire line was inspired to make women like myself and herself stay fun, sexy and trendy without the skin tight show every bump and panty line stuff. I said great sign me up!! Finally fashion that allows me to be a real human being.

The new line is called Many Belles Down and all her silouettes are carefully crafted to be form fitting without being form fitting. With some clever tailoring all the dresses from this designer will hide the tummy-butt situation while making you feel fun, sexy and most importantly comfortable. Finally a designer who remembers to pay attention to the cut!
