Polka Dots Big or Small

20 Feb

I posted about polka dots in the fall but it is becoming even bigger in the spring and summer collections so I thought it warranted another look.

Cue Clothing Summer 2012

Black and white is always the classic for dots but be brave and go for some color. Spring is great for the bright reds, yellows, greens and blues.

Dots are ranging from small classic to big and bold. Even we caught the fever.

Check out these Kling dresses at our shop.

City Slips

3 Nov

I got a sample of these a few months back and I have to say, they are the best idea ever!

Invented by two New York party goers tired of trudging home at the end of the night in painful stilettos. City slips are a pair of uber comfy fold-able ballet flats that fit into a small zip pouch. The zip pouch not only fits easily into your purse but it also unfolds into a tote bag! So at the end of the night when you slip your hurting feet into these saviors you also have a tote bag to carry your heels home in.

It is the emergency first aid kit every girl should have in her purse!

The holidays are around the corner and these will make great stocking stuffer for sisters and girlfriends.

Fly Away or Just get the Bag

28 Sep

Oh 1963 what a year. It was the golden age of American Jet setting; when flying was glamorous and being a stewardess was every girl’s dream.

From its foundation as America’s first international airline on October 27, 1927, to its peak in the 60s, and throughout the remainder of the 20th century, Pan American Airlines represented luxury, glamour and limitless possibilities.

Adored by celebrities, rock stars and the International elite, iconic Pan Am was made famous by its Clippers, first-class amenities, stewardesses, and of course, the Pan Am bag. Carrying a Pan Am bag signified the prestige of a privileged lifestyle, a certain freedom achieved when the ends of the earth are suddenly within reach.

The now defunct airline lives on in our fond memories as well as in carry on luggage and bags!

Long after the airline closed its doors, the legacy lives on. The Pan Am brand of today lives for fashion, adventure, and the thrill of the journey – no matter what your mode of travel. Pan Am offers vintage and contemporary bags, luggage, accessories and more. So explore, discover, and let the world be your runway.

Want a piece of the jet age? We’ve brought the official Pan Am bags and passport covers to our shop. Each item is made with loads of detailing and has the official certificate sewn into the lining. The bags come in both vintage and contemporary styles, all with lots of compartments and detailing. Check out the collection now available at our shop or on our website.

You might have seen these originals adorning movies like Catch Me if You Can and the new TV show Pan Am. The nostalgic imagery brought back by the movies has made us drool. We just love the retro glam of those blue uniforms and white gloves.

Argan Oil – Goes More than Skin Deep

27 Sep

Two weeks ago my younger brother came to visit and I immediately noticed his skin was clear and glowing, which is a complete 180 from his usual scalely pimply mess. He tells me it’s because he’s been using argan oil from an organic cosmetic company called Melvita.

Having struggled with my skin the last 3 years and spent hundreds of dollars getting no where I was eager to test this argan oil.  My skin has a very thin top layer that dries out and flakes easily but is oily under the surface, which when stressed creates deep painful pimples. So eager for a cure I drove downtown to the Melvita shop in Union Square. I fought the ridiculous traffic and circled for an hour until I found parking.

Yes, it was all worth it. The moment I applied it my skin felt hydrated, rich and glowing. Of course it’s just the first few days so it’s too early to say for sure, but so far so awesome!

The oil is good for both hair and skin. Argan oil is rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamin E and protein.  For skin it is nourishing as a moisturizer but it also aids in reducing scars, hypo-pigmentation, and fine lines. It absorbs quickly into your skin so isn’t heavy. I was told by the sales clerk at Melvita that because argan oil is plant based it won’t clog your pours like mineral oils can.

For hair, argan oil is used to control dryness and to boost shine. You can use it as a once a week mask or you can apply argan oil to your hair before blow drying or flat ironing. It takes all the frizz away leaving the hair healthy and shiny without any heaviness or residue.

The best part about Argan Oil is you are automatically supporting a good cause just by purchasing it. Argan oil is exclusively produced by Berber women who have formed a fair trade collective around the harvesting of this oil. Apparently the plant only grows in Morocco and they’ve been harvesting and selling the oil since before the Phoenicians. The income from this co-op funds health care, education and child care for these women.

Argan oil is pretty new in America, but English and French tourists discovered it in Morocco years ago and it’s all over the markets of Provence, along with the lavender and olive oils. Now, due to the efforts of the Moroccan King Mohammed VI, who has been praised for his efforts to promote women’s rights, the oil is being promoted and exported worldwide. What does women’s rights have to do with argan oil? Well, that’s one of the reasons I am so intrigued by it.
It is Berber women who are solely responsible for harvesting the nuts and producing the oil, and they are doing so in fair trade working cooperatives. Outside groups, like the government of Monaco, are also financially backing a system whereby women can work half days (so they can still tend to their families) in exchange for fair wages and good working conditions. This has allowed an income for women and families where before there was little.

The cooperatives have initiated an ecosystem reforestation project to help preserve the argan forest. The cooperatives are working in partnership with the Moroccan Water and Forests Authorities to allow optimal tree growth, plant argan nurseries, and create education programs. The community realizes the value of the argan tree and they are involved with its protection. In fact, Unesco has designated the 10,000-square-mile argan-growing region as a biosphere reserve.

Because of the recent hype, argan oil is popping up everywhere. To test the effects more directly get 100% pure argan oil with no synthetic additives.

Col. Mustard with the Candlestick

8 Sep

It’s back to school season and I lament how long it has been since that was for me. But for the sake of nostalgia this week’s fall fashion reporting will be brought to you in that ol’ SAT style – analogies.

Unnecessary analogy #1: Mustard is to Fall 2011 as Purple was to Fall 2009.

A perfect color for summer to fall transition because mustard can say yellow sunny happy, or turning golden leaves chill. No wonder everyone has gone mustard.

If you are like me, gaga for mustard, then the best way to wear it is as your center piece. As a dress, pair with woolly cream or toffee tights.

If you only want a little bit of mustard to show you’re in the know but not fully committed, work it into your layers. Start with one mustard item and add layers like this outfit above from Costa Blanca. Or see below for more mustard pieces.

And if you are really shy about mustard and just want a little dab, it’s a great accent color for many outfits. It’s also very easy to add with just a bag, brooch, scarf etc…

In case you wanted more accent ideas, here’s a lovely collage of more mustard things pulled from Google shopping. My favorite is the flower brooch with the sky blue base for only $10.00 on Etsy.

Stop and Replay

1 Aug

Love vintage but don’t want it used? Well I have a solution for that. Original limited 1970s-90s dead stock sunglasses. These are old items in brand new condition because they were boxed up and forgotten about from the time they were born, waiting to be rediscovered and brought back to market. These great discoveries are from Replay Vintage Sunglasses a spin off brand of La Bomba Vintage in Los Angeles.

Currently we carry three styles that are original dead stock from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Oh ya, these fun character glasses are for sure from the 1980s. I actually owned a red pair when I was a kid. Just pull the ears and they transform into sunglasses, or fold them up and wear in your shirt as a sort of brooch. These will definitely be a head turner and conversation starter. We still haven’t figured out what they are supposed to be. My vote is for squirrels but so far we’ve heard anything from piggies to kitties!

On the left we have the original folding glasses from the 90s, and they come with the foamy pouch pictured in the back. On the right is snazzy aviators from the days of CHiPs. Both have reflective lenses and are 100% UV protective.

And yes there will be more coming soon!

Posh Lady

26 May

I decided to dedicate today’s post to the style icon and fashion designer Victoria Beckham. Why? Because she rocks fashion like no other. Looking at what she’s worn over the many fashion seasons I find it hard to put into words the inspiration she presents. There’s always this balance between edgey new and vintage glamor which you know we LOVE at Fan Clothing. So here’s a compilation of my favorite Posh Beckham moments.

Find out more about her well acclaimed and already celeb studded designer collection at:  http://www.victoriabeckham.com
